Moon, 16th May

Lovely clear and steady sky this evening. Somewhat better than last night. Shame I can't stay out late. Apparently I have to be up early, though I'm not sure why :(

I've been experimenting with exposure times for the full disc Moon and this is I think my favourite of the images I processed. I'll post all the images in a separate thread with more notes.

120 frames of 1/200th @ ISO 200, 450D & 127 Mak, preprocessed using PIPP and 61 frames stacked using Registax v6.

That is a, very, very, sharp image.I see you

use Registax 6. Im still using 5.1.Do you

think 6 is better.Great picture, by the way.

Steve

Thank you :)

I did some experimentation with v5.1 and v6 and decided that when it gives a good result, v6 is better than v5.1. Unfortunately it seems that if the data is a bit rough or there's variation in brightness or contrast v6 makes a real hash of stacking where v5.1 might have muddled through.

What I do these days is preprocess with PIPP and then try v6 first. If I can't get a decent stack out of v6 after three or four tries then I'll give v5.1 a try.

Nice image. Very sharp indeed. It does have a slight feeling of being overstretched. Slightly less sharpening/contrast stretching might improve it a bit

You may well be right. Sometimes I get to a point with an image where I just can't decide if I've overdone it or not. In those situations I find it often helps to come back to it a few days later and see what I think of it.

The unsharpened stack for this one looked so clear that I almost decided not to hit it with wavelets at all -- it looked so similar to the view through an eyepiece. It's possibly the best I've ever managed.
