Confused - what cable for EQ6 PC-direct?

Does anyone know what cable I need to connect my PC serial port to my synscan handset? It looks like a serial to rJ11 but is that just a plain wire or does it have some kind of box or signal amplifier or something on it? I'm trying to avoid Eqdir at the moment but the only cable I have is a male serial to rj11 - but the PC has a male socket so I will presumably need a converter!

If the socket on your laptop has 15 pins it is a VGA monitor port, serial ports have 9 pins. You will most likely need a usb/serial adapter cable.
