The Milky Way in the UK?

Hi Tony,

Ive seen it from Norfolk when camping just north of Thetford a few years ago .... and the skies were fantastic

Would have said that unless in the centre of Norwich and a few other places that you should be able too see the milky way to some extent. It may just be a band acting as a background to constellations such as Casseiopia etc but it could be located. Even at many of the Norwich "suburbs" like Costessey, Hellesdon, Cringleford, Sprowston. In effect most areas outside the ringroad A140/A1042.

Norfolk itself can be fairly dark, there is not that heavy a population there and so relatively little light pollution, even around Norwich the skies should be dark enough. Places like Wyndonham, Attleborough, Aylsham, Wroxham should all be fairly dark and a short walk/drive to a darker location wouls show it up well. The local astro club meet not far out of Norwich and they have a dark location and they are closer in to Norwich then any places mentioned.

I will agree that for the spectacular views then something closer to total darkness is needed but to see it that is not required.

If the OP is not in Norwich then other then the sea front at Gt Yarmouth then the milky way should be seeable to some extent almost anywhere.
