The actual diameter of the mount base is 4in, but by the time you get down to the bottom of the tripod head it's about 7in. 8in wont interfere with scope/counterweight but I think 10in might.

You can always put a taper on the top, and in fact that might not hurt anyhow, but 8" across has to be plenty. One end of our tree house is held up by a timber not much larger than that:

I think you're right, 8x8 should certainly be substantial enough! I was thinking bigger = better, but I guess you can take these things a bit too far :) great tree house btw.
