try this tom i found it works great for getting tighter stars and color when used with noels actions

Noel's Actions for Photoshop have a one click 'select brighter stars' and Martin B's tutorials tell you how to make your own star selection. I felt that the video above was well worth a look and the technique has its merits but any star reduction against nebulosity will create artefacts. Use very sparingly.
