If you have on mount selected innphd When you press the buttons in phd it will move the mount at guide speed. that's way too slow to perceive by eye or ear.

You need to look at a star image in phd - select the continual exposé button (a looping arrow) and see if the stars move when you press the buttons for a few seconds.

Alternatively try to do a calibration and the mount will move itself in the same way.
