Here are the details for removing the shutter unit from the 1100D for replacement.

Strip down the camera as far as removing the imaging assembly as detailed in Gary Honis's excellent web site. This is shown in the first photo. I used a sheet of paper with labelled sections for the screws, with double sided adhesive tape to attach the screws and other small parts to show which screws etc. go where (as per Gary's suggestion on his site).

Step 1. Remove tripod bush plate. 4 screws as shown in the next two photos.

Step 2. Remove the 3 sets of shims taking note of the position and number of shims in each position. (Stick them appropriately on the screw sheet.)

Step 3. Remove all the screws that attach the metal plate to the plastic parts of the camera again taking note of which screw goes where. One is shouldered. 8 screws.

Step 4. Remove the plate.

Step 5. Remove 2 screws that attach the shutter assembly.

Step 6. Remove the view finder unit - 4 screws. Also, detach the viewfinder from the power assembly (battery box and circuit board plus SD card slot) - 1 screw.

Step 7. Lift out the shutter assembly. The next two photos show the disassembled parts.

Step 8. Finally, unsolder the wires from the shutter motor (red and black).

Step 9. Solder the wires onto the new shutter assembly motor taking care to note the polarity. Reassembly is the reverse of the disassembly.

Put it all back together now and taken photos at every step. I'll edit the photos and post them later. It seems it wasn't a faulty shutter after all - it still gives an Error 30 :( Anyway, the information is here for anyone who does have a shutter failure on the 1100D and wants to replace it themselves.
