EQ5 with dual motor drives

This is going to sound like a daft question but the Skywatcher manual is worse than hopeless for this. I've just fitted the dual motor drive kit to my EQ5 which all went fine. I know, to engage the motors the clutch has to be tightened, which is fine. What I can't get confirmation of is, do the locking levers for the RA and DEC have to be locked or open when the mount is using the motors to track?

Logic says not locked as you'd be straining the motors against the lock but practice says if you dont the scope swings about. I'm paranoid about getting it wrong so any pointers appreciated.

Yup - locked. Unlocked there is nothing at all "gripping" the RA or Dec axis so there will be no drive. P.S. Agreed - the manual is all but usless!
