Hello,

I was away to update the firmware on my handset when I realised I didnt have a serial to RJ11 cable :/ so the question is ...

can you use any cable to connect your computer to the handset or does it have to have a serial in there somewhere?

I was looking at a RJ45 to RJ11 cable as it was nice and cheap but if it's not going to work I suppose I'll need to fork out for a proper cable

You will need a usb to serial adaptor cable. I used the one from astronomiser Astronomiser - Automated Astronomy and AstroImaging Solutions

Not all convertor cables will work and most cheaper ones with the Prolific chipset don't. I believe there is a cheaper Maplins one that works though.

Thanks for the reply but as I don't have to original cable I was looking to see if there was another cable type would work or if the data transfer has to go through a serial due to some black magic that might happen with the way serial handles things.

Oh sorry! Yes you will need an original cable then and if your PC does not have a serial port, you will also need the convertor.
