First telescope for father in law advice please

Recommended Posts

My (fairly) elderly father in law has been looking at my 200p dob since I got it and has just announced he wants a telescope of his own.

I have asked him what he wants to see with it and apart from 'everything' I think he wants something for the moon & planets etc.

After showing him some pics online of the various styles these days he would prefer either a Mak style or a traditional refractor shape.

Would anyone have any advice on something suitable to show him? His budget would be around £300.

He could get the same as me for that but he prefers something smaller or more traditional.

Thanks in advance,

Rob.

The Sky watcher Evostar 102 on an EQ3-2 mount would seem to match his preference.

It costs £309 (FLO) and should show a good selection of things.

The mount doesn't come with motors to track stars which may be a later requirement. Just makes life a lot easier.

Would he have any concerns about setting up a EQ mount, for visual the accuarcy does not need to be high, just decently set up and aligned will be adaquate.

At some stage a couple of additional eyepieces will be wanted.
