  1. Im just getting some stuff up together at the moment, I havent actually used any of it yet due to the weather so was just trying to get the bes, simple set up I can for when Im ready to start using it all. I do have the zoom and yes, would sell it on if the 2 MaxVisions and a barlow would be the best option. Thanks for the input guys, Rob.
  2. That was my plan with the zoom, to ditch the barlow. I do have an Orion Shorty Plus barlow which is meant to be a good one though. Ive already got the zoom but have been offered a 16mm MaxVision so it got me thinking! Cheers, Rob.
  3. Just a quick one guys, I have planned on getting a 24mm ES MaxVision and a 6mm WO SPL to go alongside my Baader zoom for my 6" Dob. I had an idea though of getting the 24mm Maxvision and the 16mm version with a barlow, along with a 6mm SPL as above. You lot are all more experienced than me so if you have time, could you give a bit of advice on which way forward please. I just want a nice simple set up thats as easy to use as possible. The zoom gives me all ranges but going for the 24mm, 16mm 6mm and barlow gives a nice spread too (50x 75x 100x 150x & 200x from the 6mm SPL) Cheers, Rob.
  4. There is one on Ebay at the moment, I dont think its a MK111 but Im sure they are all good. VCheers, Rob.
  5. Thanks Nicos, Anyone done it or have any advice? Cheers, Rob
  6. Thanks, I definitly want to try the 24mm. If I hadnt of picked up the zoom for a good price (£100 s/h) I think I would still keep to my plan of keeping it simple and go for just a 24mm & 16mm MaxVision and a 2 x barlow, then the WO 6mm SPL, maybe even simpler than my proposed plan! Cheers, Rob.
  7. What about a Baader Zoom? Ive just picked up a mint s/h one for £100 so worked out cheaper than a host of individual eyepieces, Cheers, Rob.
  8. Thanks guys, it doesnt sound like Im too far off the mark then. I assumed the ES 24mm would be similar to a 32mm due to the wide angle but I am probably wrong! Cheers, Rob.
  9. Hi all, I like to keep things simple so have come up with the following collection for my Orion 6" Dob. I already have a Mk111 Baader Zoom and an Orion Shorty barlow and am planning the following. Sell the barlow and buy an ES Maxvision 24mm and a William Optic 6mm SPL. Nice and simple! What do you guys think? Sound ok or are there better options for either end? Thanks in advance, Rob.
  10. Hi all, Im after a bit of advice about upgrading my rack & pinion focuser to a 2 speed crayford one. I am thinking of getting a Revelation dual speed for my 6" Orion Dob which at the moment has the standard plastic 1.25" only focuser fitted. The standard one also attaches with 3 bolts, not 4. Is it going to be possible do you think or not worth the hassle? I think I can buy a focuser base from TS Services to fit them together but Im a bit worried about cutting the OTA and getting the 2" drawtube centered as I dont have existing pre drilled holes to use. Thanks in advance, Rob.
  11. Heres what I use, it can be used in the car, on a bike or even a telescope! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Breffo-Spiderpodium-Flexible-Gadget-Travel/dp/B003O1V5CY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1357768423&sr=8-2 Hope it helps, Rob.
  12. I'm not sure if its done much really, I've not used it much so haven't really noticed a difference to tell the truth. When I flocked it with the flockboard I was just short of enough to make a light shroud. I was going to try and make some sort of sliding thing that goes back inside the ota when you close it but as I didn't have enough I used it to make a dew shield instead. I think a shroud of some description will be next. Cheers, Rob.
  13. I think it's finished for now and don't know if anything I've done will make much difference but I like modding things to improve/personalize them. So far I have, Mounted it on a Skywatcher AZ4. Fitted a Telrad (much better than the original finder, even more so when I realized you looked from behind, not down into it!) Flocked the main ota with Protostar flockboard and flocked the lightshield behind the secondary with self adhesive flocking from Wilkinsons. Blackened the back/sides of the secondary & housing with blackboard paint. I seem to have got the mirror's a bit grotty doing this so will probably give them a clean soon and that's probably about it for now, then start saving for a big Dob. If there's anything else worth doing, feel free to let me know. Cheers, Rob.
  14. Thanks Guys, I tried the tape last night and it worked a treat. It takes the 'sloppiness' out of the focusser when in use. I only needed to collimate it as I flocked the main tube and the light shield behind the eyepiece. I also painted the back & sides of the secondary and its housing with blackboard paint while I was at it. It probably wont make much difference but I like modding things. Cheers, Rob.
  15. Guys, I'm after a bit of advice please. I have a Heritage 130p which was collimated for me by my local shop before I bought it. I have a Baader Cillimate and have tried to collimate following the included instructions. I think I have done it ok but the problem I am having is, When foccusing - screwing the focusser/large screw in and out it seems to move the laser dot all over the place. I assume tshis is down to the play in the screw and its housing but is there anything I can do to tighten things up? I have seen a post about wrapping plumbers ptfe tape around the screw but don't know if this would help or not. Thanks in advance, Rob.
  16. Ive just flocked my Heritage with the Protostar Flockboard from Lyra Optics. Its really good stuff and I had enough spare to make a nice dew shield. I didnt have quite enough to make a shroud, I wanted to make a sliding type like I have seen recently on here that stays attached to the top and slides down inside the OTA when closed. Might be worth a thought? Cheers, Rob.
  17. I have the Heritage and am very pleased with it. Ive mounted it on an AZ4 which is really stable. For your budget I would recommend the 130p along with a decent collimating tool (I have a Baader Colimate, but Cheshires are popular) and maybe a half decent Barlow. I have seen a thread with the whole Heritage base mounted on a tripod, could be worth a thought for the future? Cheers, Rob.
  18. Thanks for the reply's all, I was just a bit worried that the magnification was a bit too low and I would be missing things. I have a 25mm Tal Plossl so will try them both out a bit more (if this cloud ever goes) Cheers, Rob.
  19. Guys, I need a bit of advice, At the moment I have a Heritage 130p with a 650mm focal length and a GSO 32mm eyepiece which gives me 20x magnification. However I see that most people with a 200p or similar use a 32mm as their wide eyepiece which give them 38x. Is using a 32mm in a Heritage giving me too low a magnification, would something like a 20mm giving 32x be better? Or, am I thinking too much and getting it wrong again? Thanks in advance, Rob.
  20. Im a beginner and listening to others on here, I have gone for the following (at the moment) 32mm GSO 15mm NPL 10mm NPL 8mm BST Orion Shorty Plus Barlow - I did have a Tal but found the Orion slightly better. As the Orion is about 2.25x it gives me a nice spread of magnifications up to about 182x Cheers, Rob.
  21. Thanks for the pics TractionMan, just what I needed. Cheers, Rob.
  22. So far Ive mainly been looking at the planets and the moon but the other nighyt I surprised myself and found (I think) M31. Are there any other easy targets I could look for until I get more experience? Thanks in advance, Rob.
  23. I think thats what I will do, find a used one to try. the Telrad is large and would cover most of the ota on a Heritage but I need to get something better than the standard finder. Cheers, Rob.
  24. Any opinions, or am I going to have to be the guinea pig! lol
  25. Im not getting on with the standard finder on my Heritage and have heard good things about the above finders. Has anyone used them on a Heritage? I know the Telrad is very large, could it be mounted on the OTA bearing in mind its a mini flex tube, It would have to go on the lower bit. Thanks in advance, Rob.
