880/900 replacement

Are there any suitable replacements for the Phillips wonder-cam? Can't really afford to pay hundreds for a purpose built astro camera, so wondered if there were any 'normal' camera that can be adapted etc?

Tried to use an old MS VX-1000 just to see what it was like, got some craters on the Moon, that's about it.

For planets I use a modified Microsoft LifeCam which at least is USB2 and can handle reasonable frame rates, though not as good as the Imaging Source specialised cameras. But the price is very different.
