What's a LX Webcam?

Through reading various threads on here, I noticed, some of you have a LX Phillips webcam.

Is this a modified SPC880/990 and what is it used for?

A LX (Long eXposure) webcam is one which has been modified by the addition of extra circuitry to allow shutter speeds of a few seconds compared to the normal shutter speeds of a webcam.
