Filters - Which one and for what?

There seem to be dozens of different filters available, from RGB, moon, light pollution, IR etc. Now I know that various filters block differnet wavelengths of light, to block/reduce light pollution for example, but could someone give me a quick run down of what some of the basic filters do and when/why they should be used in both observing an imaging?
