Mom bought a scope...

Hi,

I've came home today and unknown to me my Mom has bought me a scope. It is a Vivitar TEL-60700 Refractor.

I've yet to purchase any astronomy items as I've only just started the hobby.

Is it worth keeping or is it cheap tat? (Sorry Mom)

I reckon it should be OK for moon and planet viewing to get you started, after that you will want to replace it if you persue the hobby. I wouldn't say it was tat though. Give it a try and just get to learn the skies with it, and it will have served it's purpose well

you'll get good views of the moon you should be able to see jupiter and the galileon moons, saturns rings, mars and venus as discs and a few other odds and sods, have fun.

It will be fine for bright objects just don't push the magnification which is a mistake a lot of people make when they start out. Personally I have a soft spot for those refractors as they remind me of when I first got into this lark.
