second hand scope - what to look out for?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I am going to look at a second hand skywatcher reflector later this week hopefully and was wondering if there is anything I should make sure I check or ask before I buy? This will be the first telescope ive bought so please treat me like a complete newbie!!

Thanks, muppetonawave

I think first check is the mirrors. A bit of dust is to be expected, but not any damage.

If it's a Dob, have a look at the base for any splits or loose joints, although tightening

screws should sort that. Other checks (that a bit of DIY can usually fix) are smooth

Dob movements, focuser action, a very basic collimation check perhaps.

If it's an EQ mount, try the movements for smoothness (undo the locks first !) the

slow motion controls or electric drives (and go-to if it has that) although you won't

know if the go-to is accurate in daylight, but you can see if things move ok.

Check for stripped threads or damage generally.

Accesories/eyepieces could be looked over too.

But don't over worry, if you ask the right questions, and do some checks, there are

some great bargains out there.

Hope all goes well, Ed.

Edit - if you can take someone who is 'scope savvy' that would be good.
