Thanks Keiran, yes, it is unguided (that'll be my next want :)). I think any field rotation might be lens distortion? If the polar alignment was off, wouldn't there be trailing in the centre too (given that this shot is of Deneb i.e. virtually overhead) ?
What gets me is there is no color at all. A lot of shots I see (yours and other people) have a lot of nebulosity in them. Is this done with filters, processing, or is it natural?
-
Yeah, I only got 3 subs of 4 minutes each at ISO 1600. Using a 500mm f8 mirror lens
-
Shot through cloud, but still disappointing :)
-
Hi Keiran, thanks for the encouragement :)
I have put some more in my album. Just not getting the results I am expecting though. Don't know if it's my original pictures, or my DSS processing, but can't seem to get anywhere near what other people seem to be able to get.
I suspect I am using too long exposures/too high ISO, but don't know for sure :)

Finally got my tracking mount working. This is now mounted on the ultra cheap surveying tripod. I am still getting to grips with DSS and so this is by no way the best of the pictures I took at 2am this morning (oh my aching head!)
This one stacked from 10 x 4 minute shots using a Tamron Twin-Tele 135mm manual focus lens at f4 and ISO 400 on my Canon 5D Mk1 full frame classic.
Spot the double star!
Other attempts at stacking in my album. Boy, still got a lot to learn :)
-
At least you saw something though! Great effort :)
-
Cracker! Well done Keiran :)
Was that DSS?
-
It was "clear", as in thin high cloud, up until about 10pm. Then it clouded over. As usual! I am waiting for Saturn so I can get an early view, but the horizon was clagged. Same in the other direction for mercury :)

Nice capture indeed, well done :)

As I understand it, is that what is called "eyepiece projection"? Were you tracking? Certainly worked well. Must have been a labour to mosaic 40 shots too Congrats again.
-
Now that is nice! Superb!
If you don't mind, when you say composite, is that a mosaic, or a stack? Were you tracking and was the Canon in prime focus, on a barlow, or projected?
Well done again.

Very, very nice! Well done. Which camera/lens was it?
-
Thx Ant. Amazing what a bit of luck will produce!

Hi Tim, this one was a pure accident. I was trying out an old 300mm manual focus lens and got the exposure wrong. Glad I did. I quite like it

Yet another boring moon shot. This one with a 60's Tamron 300mm. 22 images stacked in Registrax
-
Man, that is one cool shot! How did you get it?
-
You may be right russ, however it looked very sharp in the viewfinder, but awfully muddy in the unprocessed shot. I had the mirror locked up and self timer on, so the only thing I can think is either mirror shake, or dirty sensor. I know the sensor has dust on it, but I don't feel it is smeared with anything. I hope

From my back garden using my monster russian mirror and a huge amount of sharpening. I have come to the conclusion that my tripod is the problem with sharpness.
-
Thanks for the info Smutly. It just proves I must be doing SOMETHING wrong Well done you.

Extremely nice shot. Come on then, how did you do it? Equipment details and method please
10 x 4 minutes with darks/flats/dark flats and bias files. Take 1

Yeah, I wasn't sure what settings to use, too chuffed to actually have a working mount to actually care :) At least it has a hint of colour about it.
