Given this thread has indeed gone almost full circle and meandered into a broad based discussion about ‘scope choice philosophy and beyond - I’ll risk criticism of going off beam again by reposting this that came up elsewhere  on SGL. Food for thought! (I know off budget but gives a flavour of a good six inch aperture option).
    Thanks @Tiago Ferreira

I can absolutely relate to @Stu1smartcookie and others in terms of mistake making - it’s all part of the “fun” and learning for some  - but one must avoid analysis paralysis and do something… this thread may perpetuate ad infinitum - let us know your current thinking @Gem85 - note that the 70mm travelscope option didn’t work out for you - maybe something in the 4-6 inch aperture class like some of the suggested instruments on this thread would be more in line with what you think you need? If still not sure then perhaps taking a pause  and learning the sky with a pair of bins and a planisphere is not such a bad idea?

    Very kind from you @Astro_Dad

I just finished right now to watch the Helix nebula with it. Low in the sky, 26º altitude.

Just 15 minutes of 10 second exposures with the ZWO 294MC

  2. IF YOU DID IT BEFORE, PLEASE HIT AGAIN THE RING BELL, I HAD TO CREATE A NEW LINK. Sorry.

    LIVE STREAM ~ NEXT FRIDAY ~ DECEMBER 3rd. Starts at 11h PST / 14h EST / 19h GMT / 00:30h IST.
Live sky observation with a Dobsonian Telescope through EAA - Electronically Assisted Astronomy. Also Q&A and Guests participation. In our live streams i may use the 12 inch Dobsonian or the 8 inch Dobsonian however you may also watch the Dobsonian power in action from guests to the event. You may interact with them too. We want you to also participate and feel the Dobsonian world with us so make sure you HIT THE BELL below to be notified when the stream starts. We will be doing EAA Live Action and then Q&A. Let's have a relaxing, informative and entertaining time together. JOIN US. (The Friday weekly video will be released during the day as usual).

  4. Uranus Planet Opposition capture with a 12" DOBSONIAN Telescope, an Equatorial Platform and a ZWO ASI294MC camera. Steps to find it doing Star hopping, capturing with Sharpcap Pro and the final processed Uranus image (Astrophotography / Planetary imaging) are the steps i have in this video for you to enjoy. This is an hard planet to find so i explain a simple way i use to do it. Have a nice weekend!

  5. It feels good to grab your 8" Dobsonian and travel to a darker site sometimes. In this video i went with my 8" to meet with a friend with a 10" dobsonian at a darker site - The Algarve Mountains, where i live, in the south of Portugal. This is to benefit from one of the great advantages of this telescope: the portability. Enjoy life, enjoy astronomy! And have a nice weekend.

  6. A day full of challenges to capture the images of Pleiades and Triangulum Galaxy with an 8 inch DOBSONIAN telescope that night for the first time. Perseverance, willingness, action over frustration and acceptance of what life gives us it's the main base of this video. The Green Tint? Just the story villain. Have a nice weekend!

Many of the Newtonians we see today, including my own, have main tubes that are too short at the top, allowing a considerable amount of stray light to enter the tube and reduce contrast.

If we look through the drawtube and can see out through the top of the main tube ( ignoring the flat ), we need an extension. I made a foot-long extension for the 8-inched by rolling some camping mat material into a tube and lining it with Matt black art card.

The main tube extension fits like a glove and also acts as a dew shield for the flat. M anufacturers probably make the main tubes too short to make their ‘scopes look more compact, but this is at the expense of contrast and also makes the flat more prone to dewing.

Yes indeed. I have that in my 12" dob. And not only that. Looking through my 12" is like looking through a black hole.🙂

  8. Important improvements you should do to your 8" DOBSONIAN telescope. This is the first wave of upgrades you can do in your Dob to properly prepare it to have much better visual and imaging sessions. A second wave will be needed which includes also the Telrad finder and it will be explained in another video. Have a nice weekend!

  9. Want to buy a telescope? I give you 5 good reasons to choose an 8" DOBSONIAN Telescope. Usually the right choice for beginners but also experienced astronomers can benefit from its advantages. That's why i bought this one to join my 12 inch.
This is not just a single video but the beginning of a beautiful JOURNEY with this set up which i hope you participate too.

Please feel free to leave your comments: do you have already an 8inch DOBSONIAN or would you like to have one? What are your thoughts about it? SHARE.
This is a TS Optics (GSO) 8" f/6 DOBSONIAN.

    Have a nice weekend!

  10. All the steps i do to capture and process Jupiter from the beginning to the end. Since capturing with Sharpcap, centering with Pipp, stacking with AutoStakkert, enhancing with Registax and fine tuning with Photoshop express, this live action video has the purpose to help people that tried and fail because of the multiple software used on the astrophotography process. All the 5 steps are thoroughly and quietly explained without complications. It's not the perfect method but the simpler and easier i can do to obtain a wonderful image of this precious planet. Have a nice weekend!!
