Yep just found the ring nebula! It was more distinct than the dumbbell nebula to me. At the moment I am stuck on high power. Need that longer focus tube for my two inch eyepieces. Will have a look for the veil nebula another night. Thanks. I have a UHC filter but it’s 2”. Will have to get more.

just found M27 dumbbell nebula as well but it was very faint. Nothing like Orions nebula. Bortle class 6. Is it normally difficult with this amount of light pollution?

Well well well, in my 12” dob M13 was “Wow” better. Really surprised. Now to look for the ring nebula and others

Minor dewing can be removed with a 12v dew gun, or even fanning with a hand may work. Next step can be wrapping the eyepiece with a heated dew band, a smaller version of that used for a refractor objective.
Eyepieces not in use are best not kept in the open, like those eyepiece racks fixed to scope mounts. I keep eyepieces in an inside pocket, being a touch warmer they don’t dew up as quickly when placed in the focuser. A gently heated eyepiece case may be good.
At the end of a session all kit should be allowed to thoroughly dry before being put into storage.
Ed.
Have you got a link to a dew gun please?

What do you dry them with, just heat? Like a hairdryer?
-
I sometimes find towards the end of my sessions dew building up on the eyepiece and giving like a tunnel vision. What do you use to dry them?

How cool... now if you can actually image the landing site equipment, that would be awesome.
How?

I was struggling to make out the craters with less power but they probably will have been clearer. Will try again next time.

Ignore my questions are now answered. Thanks. Think I’m happy with the view through the Telrad and finder scope matching.

I’ve learned something, thanks.

Should this thread actually be titled "What finder arrangement do you use with your dobs ?" ?
I use a RACI optical finder alongside a Rigel Quickfinder which is similar in function to the Telrad. Both show the same view my eyes see and the same as my star charts give.
When I view through the dob the view is inverted and E & W reversed but I find that I can cope with that provided that the view though the main scope is pretty exactly aligned with what the RACI finder is showing.
Others might prefer finders to show the same view as their scope though. I guess you have to find what works for you ?
Yes sorry I meant finder. I’ll have to work out if I prefer the main finder and Telrad matching or the main finder and the view through the focuser. Just had a play about tonight and I quite like the Telrad and the finder scope matching.

Right just tested it out. So the view through the straight through seems to match the view through the focuser. The Telrad is inverted. Doesn’t seem like any point getting a RACI if it will invert that view but I understand it will match the Telrad. Not sure what’s better.

So if I get a RACI Finder will it be the same way up as the Telrad? And the Dob will still be inverted? Confused sorry for all the Q’s. Not sure if the straight through matches the Dob focuser.

RACI (Right Angle Correct Image) means the image is the right way up. There are also RA (Right Angle) finder where the image is not the right way up. Straight through finders also aren’t the right way up.
Is a Telrad the right way up? When used with a typical dob?

Hi all.
I’ve just realised I was looking through my Telrad the wrong way. No wonder I couldn’t get on with it 😂 I also realise now I ca adjust the position of the crosshair and suddenly it all makes sense. Only problem is I sold it with my old scope that is being picked up on Saturday 😂 nevermind.
Just another couple of questions. I’m hearing a lot about a RACI Finder but what does it stand for? It seems some are illuminated and some are not but they are all right angled. The Telrad isn’t right angled so it sounds easier to just it with my straight through finder? Just wondering what people do.

Don’t know about the focal plane. Do you not use a Telrad or just that right angled focuser John?

Thats odd - when I tested the Myriad 20mm I seem to recall it came to focus in my 12 F/5.3 OO scope at about the same place that the 21mm Ethos does - plus or minus a mm or two
Just spoke to John at OO. He said try moving the mirror forward or something but it confused me. (I’m not that good at adjusting the mirrors yet but will get used to it). He said he thinks it’s a faulty eyepiece but I’m going to buy a 2” focuser extension off him anyway. I had to not fully insert the eyepiece for it to focus, but like just on the edge barely holding it in.

I did need to make 2 holes in slightly different positions but the tube is aluminum so this was not a difficult job.
See how you get on with the focuser that is already fitted though - it looks a decent unit.
What 20mm eyepiece are we talking about here by the way ? - most eyepieces have a focal plane that is within 10mm of each other but one or two types vary a lot so will need much more focuser movement than ordinarily necessary.
It was the Myriad XWA 20mm

Just reading that Telescopius website. Very useful. It shows the ring was mag 8.8 and the dumbbell 7.4. Sounds about right. Except for it says M13 is only 5.8 and it stood out the most to me.
What to go for next time? More globs? Any more nebulae or even galaxies? I don’t think I’m going to do the veil for a bit as there isn’t much point by the sounds of it until I have an oiii filter. I need to get a longer extension tube first so i can use my larger eyepieces.
