  1. Well i can say i have had the SW 150 Mak for a couple of years now, it is a real planet/moon wonder scope, the relatively small central obstruction compared to an equal sized SCT will allow for a higher contrast image. When it comes to imaging, i have had great success imaging planets and the moon, even with a bare bones, bottom of the line camera. The reputation of Mak's forplanetary and lunar observation is well respected, they are Niche scopes, though, they do have an inherent narrow FOV. Regardless of their super long focal length and narrow FOV, i have had some great views of brighter deep sky objects, i recall the Orion Nebula beautifully contrasted in the eyepiece on a dark night recently. There are several others here with the same scope, they may join in with more technical info to help you make a decision. Speaking from a first hand POV, i can honestly say that when viewing conditions are good and, the scope has reached ambient temperature, looking at the moon and planets, it does this superbly. My only gripe with my 150 Mak is the cool down time, they take a while, having a very thick objective lens means it dissipated heat slower than a comparable sized SCT but, if you can keep it in a place close to outside temp then you're ahead of the game.

Below are two images i have taken through my 150 Mak with a very inexpensive Celestron Neximage 5 camera.

  2. Unfortunately the darn phone adapter I wasted $20 on doesn’t fit on my 18mm APM eyepiece.

Regardless, my hand is rock steady, thank god, i managed what i can honestly say is my best hand held moonshot.

150 SW Mak and 18mm APM, shot with iPhone 6S.

Update: i have tweaked the photo in Lightroom slightly, improving contrast a bit and small adjustments to highlights and, switched it to B&W.

This is about as good as i can do, with a hand held phone at least, it is very tricky to frame and hold still while pressing the shutter hand held.

If there's one thing i really do enjoy, is making the most of what little knowledge and equipment i have, i hope you all like it, feel free to lend advice of course.

  3. Hello, i was peeking around on SGL looking for previous posts where thermal wrap for a mak was discussed, in order to remedy currents as they take a while to cool.

It would be great to hear from those who have done it, i was unable to find previous posts, some suggestions and, opinions on the effectiveness of thermal wrapping

    them would be great.

    Thank You!

  4. Hello Tom, welcome to SGL! I had the CPC 1100, unfortunately it almost killed me twice while carrying it down my steps, loved it but, I had to part ways.

If you can leave it assembled and, just wheel it out then you're gold, enjoy it!.
