  1. @happy-kat . Thanks for supplying that, I have just sent the chap that did the mod an email to ask if he can do it for me. It looks like a brilliant idea to counter balance the weight of more gear added to the ST 120m Regards. Dave;
  2. Is it ok to use the Skywatcher 2" Di-Electric Star Diagonal which Includes 2"-1.25" adapter, can I use 1.25 eyepiece's as stated above for my ST 120mm, I hope so as I have purchased one from FLO. I did not want to have to buy 2 diagonals (2" and 1.25") as I want to get a PanaView 2" eyepiece so was informed a good 2" diagonal with adaptor would be the ticket for both types of eyepieces. Thanks again for all your help. Regards. Dave:
  3. @Alan64 . Again thanks for your time to post, your detailed information is well received and I will take note of all you have said. There seems to be a lot of good eyepieces around the £40-50 mark
  4. @ ALAN64 Thanks for that reply. I will take a look at those vixen eyepieces, they seem like good value for money for replacing my 25mm lens. Also would I be better off getting the Skywatcher 2" Di-Electric Star Diagonal. with the included 1.25" adapter. Or a dedicated 2" Star Diagonal. Regards. Dave:
  5. @Super brantuk . thanks for that. The ST 120mm looks a very nice piece of kit so am looking FWD to getting one Regards. Dave:
  6. Yes I am going to be as careful as I can. I have purchased a Celestron 7mm X-Cel LX eyepiece 1.25" and either a Baader Planetarium 2.25x Q Barlow Lens 1.25" or a Celestron X-CEL LX 2x Barlow Lens 1.25" to order this week. I have also purchased a Baader Semi Apo filter 1.25" to cut down CA effect and it seems to work as I know somebody locally to me that has the same filter on a ST 150mm and it works really well, it cuts out most of the blue fringe around the outside especially in the day. I will also swap out the stock 25mm for a quality equivalent, not sure which one though. The scope I will be getting for my birthday on 13/2/16. I thank everyone on this site because 3 weeks ago I new nothing about telescopes and astronomy in general, and now am feeling quiet confident in buying my first telescope and extras after reading loads of comments from you guys, also its great to get all your feedback and take it all in regards. 7. I have been doing some research and trying to learn about eyepieces and overpowering the telescope. Is this equation right as I understand. The ST 120 is a 600mm focal length and 120mm aperture? so to get an eyepiece to work inside the scopes capacity is to A x the 120 by 2 to give the maximum magnification at 240x. So the standard aperture of the ST 120mm is 600mm, so do I divide that by the 10mm lens that comes with it to get 60x and the 25mm lens would be 24x so there is massive room for improvement. Now if I add a good 2 or three element 2x Barlow does that effectively give me double the focal length now, so I should have 1200mm focal length so a 10mm lens should now give me 120x. So from that I can squeeze out more mag and go to 1200% by a 7mm lens to give me around 171x magnification, if I go to a 6mm lens I would get 200x mag so still not going over the 240x mag with the 2x Barlow but maybe to strong for the scope. Is this how it works out so as not to overpower your telescope. And if I take the Barlow out and just use eyepieces I would get at the extreme end, 600 aperture % a 3mm lens would get me I would think an unusable 200x magnification. I don't want people saying that the scope is Rubbish with a Barlow or just use a 3mm lens to get 200x mag is bad, I just want to no is this how you work it out Regards. Dave
  8. Hi mate, I have just been looking at your comments for the skytravel 120mm and would like to no, if you did get the 2inch EP and the 2inch diagonal. I am about to purchase a new ST 120mm and could use all the advice I can muster.

                                  regards Dave

I think this may be of some use to you:-

      http://astronomy.tools/calculators/field_of_view/

You can select your scope, eyepiece combination and target.

It should then show you approximately what the view will be like of the selected target.

      Hope this helps

Well I am not to impressed, the moon looks like I am lookin through a cheap pair of binoculars, not very good at all. It looks like I wont be getting the ST 120mm. the moon looks very small, I cant see anything like any detail. Have I done some thing wrong. I put all the right info in , it auto detects focal length and such, and with the Celestron 6 or 7mm x-cel lx eyepiece it looks rubbish. I am glad you pointed me to this tool. I am very disappointed at a telescope with that lens and getting near the £400 mark giving that kind of image. Thanks for sharing it with me

                                         Regards. Dave

if you desperately want high magnification, then a Mak would be a better choice

      But

they aren't as good on some DSO's because of their narrower and darker field of view.

      High Mag planets/moon = Get 127 Mak

Low to medium, star clusters DSO, nebula = ST120

This is basically what i use my two scopes for

Try the tool again, but with the 127mm Mak

Believe me, the view of the moon, even in an ST120 is far superior to any pair of binoculars i have ever looked through.

  9. @Bobby1970 . finally someone that used the ST 120mm. Can you please recommend a good 6/7mm EP to add to what will be in the box of the startravel and would you recommend a Barlow? and if so what type Regards. Dave:
  10. Gosh there are pros and cons for both, if I stick with the skytravel 120mm and get myself a very good long eye relief 5 or 6mm EP would that work and also would I need a good barrow, as I believe one does not come with the skytravel 120mm. Have just seen some pretty good up-close creator shots of the moon with the 120mm ON YOUTUBE. Or do I go with the 127 sky scan Maksutov, I think that's what it is. The only thing putting me of is powering it by some 12volt means, and carrying it around with you, and the dew problems they have. I am not sure. See how much I have learned by visiting this site. Like I said at the start I want it for strong day use and to see the moons creators at night. I will keep researching. Regards. Dave
  11. @Peter Drew . Thank you for you suggestion, that's why I came here for advise. I never even gave the Maksutov a thought. Are you saying this telescope is far and away a better scope than the one i had in mind?. The one thing I would say is there are hardly any reviews on the skytravel 120mm, but there are loads on the Maksutovs so that must say something to me. I will take a serious rethink on what telescope to buy now. Thanks for yours and everybody's suggestions Regards. Dave:
  12. Hi to you all. I am a complete newbie. I am getting the STARTRAVEL-120 (AZ3), and need some advise. I contacted 2 dealers with conflicting advise. I told them I wanted the scope for land but also for night time views. I told the dealers I wanted something better than what would be supplied with the telescope. Both the dealers said that a Sky-Watcher Planetary 58° UWA 1.25" Eyepieces 6 or 7mm would be great for strong land views and still be ok for night sky use. Also one of the dealers suggested the 2"/50.8mm Di-electric Coated 90 degree Star Diagonal with 1.25" adaptor and a PanaView™ 2" Eyepieces 32 or 38mm would be great for night time. I want the telescope to be able to see right up close to the moons creators and hopefully go beyond. Both the dealers were conflicting on a deluxe 2x Barlow, one said it would be to dim with the big eye piece while the other said it would be fine, and also they conflicted about using a moon filter, one said you should not need one when using the 2x Barlow while the other suggested a moon filter or the Light Pollution Filters 1.25” and 2”. As you can properly tell I am now very confused as to what to get. I don't want to just be satisfied with what comes with the 120mm telescope so I want to upgrade as I order all the stuff together, that's why I want your help. Am I being told the right advise as both dealers are saying different things. Like I said I want something very powerful in the day with a quality eyepiece upgrade and a good powerful eyepiece for night sky views. I am very sorry for the long question but I need the right advise. I hope somebody can please help me and say whether I was advised correctly or can you suggest something else to aid the startravel 120mm. Thanks in advance for any advice Regards. Dave:
