Nice one John, think I need to travel to better vantage point, only had a few hours window between it appearing over the rooftops and disappearing behind trees.

    Dave

I didn't have a chance from home, My northern horizon consists of a 12 foot wall mainly so I travelled to the field at the top of the hill. I will be making a return trip for sure :)

  2. Gee whiz it's a corker isn't it!!!

I've had a few quick looks through binoculars but tonight I set everything up and had a good session. The moon rising behind me, 3 nice ISS passes as well and lovely clear skies to the north. Even with the light pollution over the city I had lovely naked eye views once I found a good spot away from the streetlights. No noctilucent clouds though.

Lots of image data to process but here's a quick one straight off the memory card, shot at 50mm. Just a little noise reduction and contrast added. Very nice.

  3. I took the camera and tripod out on my evening walk. The ISS pass was a beauty, passing under Regulus and the Moon but no sign of the Dragon. I reckon it was lost down in the Mirk shown in the 2nd image.

It's worth thinking about: the cheapest commercial launch system in the world is also rated for human spaceflight, and it is partially reusable. Falcon 9 is really one of the most remarkable rockets in the history of the space age.

Incredible isn't it, I don't think I'd even heard of SpaceX on the day they shut down the Shuttle Program and now just 9 years later they have their amazing testing regime which has produced one of the most efficient and safest lift systems on the planet - incredible.

  5. 50 frames with the Tamron @ 500mm, my usual process for stacking - Pipp>AS!3>IMPPG>Photoshop.

Worth clicking through for full size I think.

And a Mono version with a little extra contrast

  6. I had an idea to do a composite of the Moon with earthshine. A sort of HDR(ish) image showing both the detail in the illuminated side as well as the earthshine (I've tried it before with varying degrees of success)

Using the HDR tools in various software has never worked so I set up the Tamron and took 7 images (the longest being a long enough exposure to show Asellus Borealis and some other local stars in Cancer), with a view to manually blending the layers in Photoshop and painting in the detail in the illuminated side.

Afterwards I realised that I'd missed an opportunity to capture the Moon and M44 just 1.5° below it, I wish I'd thought of that before I framed and captured the data! It's too late now as the Moon is below my West garden wall.

Anyhoo, enough of my blethering, here's the moon, in Cancer.
