But it looks like using slic3r instead of CuraEngine has cured the problem

i had a few issues with iffy print quality at first. my M555 is P2 for reprap and now the print quality is brilliant

have you tried herringbone gears? i printed a couple off for lols and they mesh incredibly well.

now that's a novel z-axis

have you thought about using high poundage braided fishing line instead of string?
