  1. From the album: Learning to use my kit

M81 and M82 third attempt whilst trying to learn to use my camera, scope and tripod. This time tried 1600 ISO and 26 x 2 minute exposures plus 20 x darks/bias/flats. I think this could have been better as the moon was still up for some of the first images in the stack. ISO 1600 seems to work better at about 2 mins than ISO 800 on my equipment to my eye.

    M81 Second Attempt

From the album: Learning to use my kit

Using M81 as a reference point to learn Astrophotography. About 35 images stacked to make this one. Tried a number of different exposures from 30 seconds to 2 mins. Forgot to check the histograms on the images until about halfway through…! Windy night but 2 mins gave the best histogram at ISO 800. Imaged for about an hour but had to bin quite a few because of the wind which stretches my EQ 3/2 to the limit so probably about 35 minutes of exposure and not too many at 2 mins. Will try M81 1600 ISO next time to see if I can get more signal or if generates too much noise.

The camera riding piggy back weighs the same as my DSLR and is only there for balancing purposes (that's why I don't care it's the wrong way round).

    Equipment

My Skywatcher 150Pl plus EQ3-2 Pro and Canon EOS 700d. (The camera riding piggy back on the back of the scope is my Canon Powershot SX40 that weighs nearly the same as my DSLR - only there as a counterweight to help balance everything).

It's not biscuits in the red box (honest!)
  6. I'm just learning everything at the moment. This one was done with about 10 lights, 10 darks of the same length, 10 flats and 10 bias. Don't know if that's right or not but seems to have worked. The longest light frame was 3 mins. Most were much shorter. Then just played with levels in Photoshop to get it right.

    M51 first attempt

From the album: Learning to use my kit

Always loved the Whirlpool Galaxy and will come back and do a much longer stint on this once I've worked out how to use all my kit properly and ironed out all the kinks. Skywatcher 150PL / EQ3-2 Pro and Canon EOS 700d

Again, still trying to work out how to do everything so just test shots really. Spent no more than 15 minutes on this. I think I caught M82 in the top right by accident. Skywatcher 150PL / EQ3-2 Pro and Canon EOS 700d

    Ring Nebula For Web

From the album: Learning to use my kit

Really clear night trying to work out focus and get alignment sorted on my equipment. Just took about 10 pictures of the Ring Nebula to get started and work things out. Maybe pushed saturation a bit high in deep sky stacker (18%). Skywatcher 150PL / EQ3-2 Pro and Canon EOS 700d

    Dumbbell2web

From the album: Quick go at Dumbbell Nebula

Second time out doing astrophotography and managed to get this image of the Dumbbell nebula. Really clear night, thought I'd get loads of images but then a neighbour started a bonfire at 12.00am and that put paid to everything after four 60 second images and four darks. Processed a bit in Photoshop after. Skywatcher 150PL on an EQ3-2 Pro plus Canon EOS 700d

First pictures through my 150PL with DSLR attached
  12. From the album: 2013 08 29 First Pics

I was using Vega as a nice star to work out the focus on my 150PL and Canon 700D and managed to get a surprisingly good test shot (to my eyes anyway). 46 second exposure at ISO 800. Skywatcher 150PL on EQ3/2 Pro with Canon 700D.
