One more thing to add. The usual FLO compression ring suitable for the ED80/ED100 etc. does not fit into the ED72, as the internal drawtube thread is M54, you need to use the compression ring for the SW newtonians, so instead of using this:

    Use this one:

Regarding the reducer spacing I have checked my numbers with my QHY168, (another nightmare of camera with a lot of spacers), and it gives me around 56.5mm, when I use the camera with the Baader Mpcc I need around 57 to 57.5 mm to eliminate the coma, I will see what happens with the ED72.

    Cheers.

You are correct, The thread size on the ED72 draw tube is M54. I Could not reach focus using the standard thick 12mm collar fitted on the ED72 using a SW 0.85x reducer with a 2" pushfit adaptor. I have to use a pushfit adaptor instead of the screw on method due to using a IDAS 2" LPR filter. However I did overcome the focusing issue by replacing the standard collar to a low profile collar which I use on my 130PDS to reduce the draw tube intruding into the light path, which measures 8mm thick compared to the standard collar of 12mm .

    Cheers.

  2. That looks lots better doesn't it. Most centre spots are quite accurate centered, another way of checking if centered, draw around the mirror using a pencil, cut out the shape of the mirror on a plane piece of paper or a thin film of plastic, fold the paper 2 or 3 times, and make a center hole in the sheet of paper/plastic. Align it with mirror careful so you don't scratch the mirror then check where your centre aligns on the mirror. You could also use a Cats Eye mirror marking template.

  3. Wow just wow all of you the images in this thread are pure inspiration to me and I only to be a quarter as good one day.

I have patiently read through all of the 35 pages today as I have been trying to start astrophotography with just my dslr and tripod and I am looking for a scope to progress onto when the time is right and to be honest looked at the 130 due to cost :) sorry to go off topic and not sure were to post this question but can this scope work well with a dslr as from what I have read here the majority of images are all via cdd camera's and we'll out of my budget.

Sorry again if this the wrong place and please keep this thread going into have absolutely loved reading it today and viewing your images.

    Darrell.

Of course you can use a DSLR with it, the scope is optimised to be used for a DSLR, you'll be surprised what you can achieve with this scope and a DSLR coupled with a coma corrector.

  4. Hi John,

Agena astro in the US used to do an adaptor for the C100ED so you could fit something like a TS monorail, but they have now stopped doing them :(

As you know Moonlite do a flange for most scopes including this one but we're talking about 350 pounds to find. Otherwise it's which annoys me more out of some CA or the C100ED focuser, Hmmm? I think it depends on how much CA.

Anyway sorry I digress from the thread

The objectives in the C100ED and the C80ED are excellent for the price that you pay for them, maybe a slight overcorrection in the red, but the strehl values are high in these doublets compared to even some triplets which can be found in todays market costing twice the amount. I can live with the focuser being insulated with Teflon.

  5. Hi, in which ways would this be better than buying the Moonlite with Moonlite C100ED flange?

    http://www.firstlightoptics.com/moonlite-focusers/moonlite-cf-crayford-focuser-for-refractors.html

Wouldn't you have to drill three holes into the threaded section of the tube with the Agena kit?

I know RussWill has recently done similar with his C100ED and TS mono rail.

Some of the threads on the focuser tube section are threaded to a different size. So I am not satisfied that the moonlite will thread perfectly on the tube. No fault to moonlite, just a problem with the scope manufacturing. The agena kit already has the three pre drilled holes in the cnc machined adaptor. The only problem is trying to source one as AA don't sell them no more, looks like a job from Graham at Astrotec based in Suffolk.

  6. Very nice matching scopes Skyline. I've only recently got hold of a C100ED myself. I really like it apart from the focuser which jerks when you try and focus, and also makes the image shift left and right!

I'm definately going to try and tune it, and if that fails it might be new focuser time.

The rest of the scope is worth it.

I am pondering about buying a agena Astro focuser ring adaptor then coupling that with a moonlite focuser as I think this would be a better fitting with three screws, then a screw on configuration.
