I really like it, nice details. Is that with the new mono?

Yes 462. Soon i will look back on these Jupiters and laugh. But i enjoy the bad, with the good. prefer the good though. wont be long a cracker is coming soon.

That looks awful. I see what you mean; exceptionally brief moment of good seeing with really sharp Cassini division that disappears in no time. I agree it does not look like jestream as you do not have the boiling effect. It reminds me of the sessions last year, same effect when we had the hot summer months. Let's hope it stabilises. This year the jetstream seems to have missed us.

It got a bit more stable as it got higher, i can imagine stable and no wind to get a much better result its encouraging. Onwards and upwards

The equipment should never stop people trying, you just have to be more realistic in your expectations.

Something, i personally do have to keep telling myself at times 🙂

I find hard to myself that when i get serious about imaging. Hence lugging a 40kg system into the garden a lot. But even then UK skies temper what we often get. But your right it is all about being realistic.

  4. Was Testing my New 462 mono. After Saturn i tried a few hurried captures before i got to Jupiter. Unfortunately wind was getting even stronger, and was blowing around a lot. captured between 4 and 5000  frames  (normally i capture 10000)

As i was running out of space. Despite all that, still hasn't come out terrible. Couldn't be bothered to frame the shots, ( mostly Clavius) The chip size might be limited compared to my 178mm. But its more sensitive. So i certainly will be using it for smaller close ups lowish elevation mid twenties

All shots either full size capture size. Or slight downsizes

Thanks Neil. I hardly had to push the sharpening on this one. It's the reason I go for daylight imaging, a lot more stable.

As we said in our messaging earlier, I thought Saturn would have been amazing but got up to clouds and your Saturn image confirmed that seeing was past it's best.

All of the above See my short Saturn example showing the de focus effect. I know you also had this problem last year. So far its been a good seeing killer for me. It will change. The good thing is Jupiter will enter cooler weather high up

  6. Here is a small example of my theory to do with the de focusing effect happening a lot around the country. Their was no jet stream. This is essentially good seeing being destroyed by a different atmospheric effect, unrelated to the jet stream. I believe we are seeing warm dry pockets of air, Mixing with the cooler night air. When those pockets of different temperatures Collide. The image defocuses. Think of standing in the sea it feels cold. then as you walk around you feel a warm area hit your legs. I believe its a similar effect. What i haven't figured out. Is exactly what causes those pockets of different temperatures to manifest. But clearly long dry spells of sun are related. I wonder if the seeing will Improve on Jupiter around autumn. As the heat effect becomes less troublesome. Its a theory. Now to wait to see if it happens

  7. What's also quite remarkable is its often more difficult to get detail with a reduced phase. But that's not happening here. What detail can be seen  is fully on show. Just wondaful. Congrats on a superb capture

I have a feeling the seeing was at its best at this point. Before the temperature dropped and warmer air started mixing with cooler air.

Nice one Neil. Not bad for a low elevation and an achro. At my location the moon has essentially disappeared for now.

Cheers Roy tried this morning but was very windy

Excellent first light with the 462m. You are almost starting to get the cassini division all the way around.

This is what's frustrating. the conditions not allowing that kind of image. But its possible In UK skys. Different locations may be better than others. Would need very steady air to get it all the way around. But its doable in the UK . Just conditions

  10. Wanted to try the New camera. Was way to windy, so just kept trying to pause as it flew off screen lol. I am learning a lot about this out of focus seeing that keeps happening. There was no jet stream. totally still.

Unfortunately The image Was constantly defocusing. Like right out of focus. It started Really bad. with the wind and defocusing i didn't hold out much hope on a reasonable first shot with the new camera. But stubborn as i am As it got higher, The defocusing was happening somewhat Less.

Enough to get some mediocre frames between the pausing and wind. If i could get good conditions, I can tell this is nothing compared to what i think i could get. I reckon this is about

40 50% of what i know is possible at my location. Still it was better than the other day. And i like this mono chip

Yeah can tell you had poor seeing. It will improve when you get Jupiter higher. For now its a mono camera as i need to get green and blue Baader filters. But the camera is so good its worth dabbling in RGB Again at some point

I did say hello to jupiter this morning as I let Tara out at 3 am and was tempted but my bed was calling me.

Plenty of time Ibbo. I need the exercise lol. So that's a  inspiration too. But Jupiter is back and steadily getting higher how long have we waited for this

This is now in my hands and i am thrilled

    Very nice.

I tried a couple of weeks ago and they were not very good, but were good practice.

That's how i see it too good practice. The only capture that's really come out any better was the IR. Its also good practice processing gas planets something i am rusty with. I am currently using two programs. But will revert to the less noisy one here and their i think as Kon is right too much noise is creeping in, despite the detail i am pulling out this early. I may try some re processes. But really i just need far better data

Really nice images Neil. Especially the mono Jupiter. Cracking detail.

Seeing our way this morning was pretty darn good. I had Saturn up at 300x and a nice clean view of Cassini. Jupiter will be epic in a month or so.

Hi Russ i don't doubt it. No jet stream has its effect. Unfortunately for me using quite large optics. For some reason. ( its a trait) It wouldn't settle, i suspect its the large optics struggling to  reach equilibrium.  I don't really want to be doing major surgery. But could likely benefit from a fan firing across the surface of the mirror, To disrupt the boundary layer. Great as large Newtonians are they don't come without their own set of issues. I will likely run the fan a lot more between captures. Even try some with it running. But contrary to what i read on other forums. Often i find that's worse. I will also keep using my 245 mm Orion. which is a little less troublesome.

Some nice details visible, it is going to be much more fun at 50 degrees though. 🙂

Hi Pete agreed it will also be bigger and brighter with better contrast in darkness. Lets not forget this only the second early attempt

Excellent images, both Jupiter and Saturn.

The way the rings are becoming near flat is amazing.

    Cheers

really because of the out focus problem i needed more frames.  Some of the reason results not as good as i would like. But its early days

Saturn is looking pretty good despite the conditions; Cassini division is quite sharp for a colour capture ( assume with an ADC as well?).  I am with you on avoiding blending data to make things look better than they are.

I am looking forward what you can do with the 462mm.

Trust me, if i could just get good seeing and have Saturn sharp without constantly going out of focus. The result would destroy what i am getting at the moment. Had a few glimpses of that on the 16th, but again, just glimpses  Some of it might not be seeing. Larger optics often don't stabilize. They fluctuate. It may be that what's causing me grief hard to be sure. At least with Jupiter its going to be so high, i know i will get something good at some point. These are 30 degrees in daylight. So its going to get a lot better. The better the data, the less processing you need  Saturn is very hit and miss. I also don't get long before it hits a roof. But i am stubborn. it often pays off being like that.  I live in hope. Cameras now running. was just playing with it. No hassle loading it.

Very nice images. I really like the IR one with its subtle details. The colour ones look good as well but a tad oversharpened (?). Seeing must have been good this morning with no jet stream but I did not manage to get up. How did Saturn fare if you captured any?

It was the going in and out of focus type. Though not as bad as I've seen, still far from great. Haven't got great seeing on Saturn yet. Color is also more difficult. And i prefer straight color captures no added IR s which makes it more difficult. Here's a Saturn in color its improving but still no where near what I've caught before. Bad data makes me push things. trust me its preferable to blur My 462MM just arrived. So that's going to be fun when Jupiter's 50 degrees I may try some RGBs need to get a green and blue. will try a red 610
