Great pictures @Jessilee, welcome to SGL ๐

Do you need more in focus or out focus with smaller eyepieces ?
If in focus is needed you may be able to remove an extension ring off the focuser.
If out focus is needed you can add an extension ring or just pull the eyepiece out a little bit and then secure it.

I have a Celestron Starsence Explorer DX 130AZ F5, with 650mm focal length. I can't seem to pull in images as I thought I would. Am I expecting too much?ย
Working numbers say anything more than 13mm eyepiece won't focus.
Saturn is smaller than pencil diameter, and the Pons comet is just a small smudge, not very distinct.
Again, am I asking to much for larger, clearer images?

Hello @Florida Bearย and welcome to SGL.
A 13mm eyepiece gives x50 - thats the focal length of the telescope divided by the focal length of the eyepiece, so 650/13 = 50.
At the moment Saturn is well past closest approach so is very small.
You can certainly use shorter focal length eyepieces in your scope, for the planets I would suggest x185 (a 3.5mm eyepiece) is good.
Or you could buy a x2 barlow lens that doubles the focal length of your telescope to 1300mm and then use a 7mm eyepiece to get x185.
Comets are dull smudges even in bigger scopes.
โstellariumโ is a great piece of free astronomy software that you can download to see what is in the night sky.
Hope that helps.

I suspect you may need a good 18โ scope and good seeing to view Amalthea.

Having owned all of the scopes in the original post I would say the Tak gave the best views the 150 ED was a fine scope optics very good and yes image larger but still lacked the sharpness of the Tak the 120 I had was a very good equinox model and was in my opinion close to the Tak but I had another 120 which was not I have had several C9.25 and didnโt think they gave me any more than the C8HD edge Having tried most large apertures from top brands and Chinese makers there were two that really impressed me the Altair 130 EDT and the APM 140 which ultimately led to me obtaining a TEC140 which is now perfect size to handle I still own a Tak FS102 which gives sublime views and a great grab and go scope for me obviously other people have different opinions we all get the aperture bug but quality still outperforms quantity as I found the bigger scopes were more hassle to use and I didnโt use them as much as I do know but it was a fun and expensive journey .
I also think more and more that as the UK does not have consistently great skies that quality over quantity for visual astronomy may be the way to go.ย

I had an 1/10th wave OO VX8L mounted on an EQ mount, it did not blow me away visually compared to the 8โ Skywatcher Newt that I had. It was lighter and a little better optically but MUCH more expensive.
But both scopes got to some awkward viewing positions and the tripod legs got in the way a lot.
I found my back started complaining after a while so sold them.
Now all my scopes have the eyepiece at the back and I sit to view - much more relaxing and my back thanks me for it.
But Newts do give the best performance to cost ratio.

Yes that is what I have now, the flint has 2 pieces of scotch magic tape the third position looks like a piece of tinfoil.ย
A devil to keep in place but managed it.ย
Is the crown at the front of the scope, facing incoming light ?

Just for clarity here is a diagram of how the lens arrangement should be, with the crown facing the starsโฆ..

Hi Roy,ย
You'd think so wouldn't you. I know imaging selects best frames for stacking, but if all the frames were mushy, so would the final image? Unless my logic is flawed.ย

I had a good C6, an excellent C8 and a terrible C9.25. In my opinion SCT optical quality varies.
For the same price as a C9.25 you can buy a Takahashi 180mm Mewlon with 1/20th wave optics which seem to get consistent praise ๐

I would suggest as your configuration is not working that you just flip the thin top lens over so that both arrows point in the same direction and give that a try to see if you get improvement.

Did it work OK when you first received it ?

ย Hi, I have Meade LX90 ACF 8 inch SCT, similar to yours. I had similar idea to get some 'better'ย eyepieces for lunar/planetry. In the end I just doubled up on most of my eyepieces and use with Binoviewer. If you are able to get along with BV they do offer stunning views, and a comfortable relaxing experience.ย

Hello @wookie1965
I received an eyepiece that displayed the same views you described with your scope.
The lenses had been put back into the eyepiece the wrong way round.
I suspect all you need to do is turn the lenses to the same orientation as the above diagram and you will have a good scope ๐

SW 120ed v Starfield 102

Assuming you have a suitable mountโฆ.
Both have probably similar optical quality, but the 120 has more resolution and light gathering so that would be my choice.
PS - there is an SW Equinox ED120 in the for sale section.
