Hi could anyone recommend a company to recoat a lens. I recently purchased a couple of scopes on eBay and one an 80mm refractor turned out to be a rather nice triplet apo. But could do with new up to date coatings, hence the question..

You could try Kingsview Optical http://www.kingsviewoptical.com

I contacted them once about a repair on a lens, they were at least willing to talk which others were not.

I see they now advertise Repair and Refurbishment.

Will say I never followed up getting the lens repaired - half the reason being I cannot lay my hands on the lens.

Be aware that an antireflection coating is very well adhered to the glass surface. it is not a case of wipe it off with a "magic" chemical so the cost of removal and replacement may be a bit on the high side.

As said they were pleasant to talk with and maybe I should have followed up, they will want to see the lens which with you being in Derbyshire may not be so easy as if you post it and they give a high cost (too high) then you have already suffered shipping cost both ways.

There are others and maybe a 30 minute google search might turn up something closer.

Lens coatings

These day's are multicoatings not the old mag flourite types and are fused to the optical surface so a recoat means a refigure of the og making it uneconomic in tha a new object glass would probably be the cheaper option

the lens in question is an early triplet, and while not on par with the very latest trips is still a nice project, it currently has either no coatings or very little, so I think removal wont be an issue. In star tests the lens performs excellently with perfect stars , and no discernable chromatic ab. the three elements are oil seperated and are nicely mounted in brass cell.

My 5" F15 triplet is similar, no coatings but two of the components are oil spaced. The performance is excellent (refigured by Horace Dall) and I wouldn't care to risk having it coated, modern hard coatings are applied with considerable heat in the process AFAIK.
