Problem with Registax 6

Recommended Posts

Registax 6 used to open the avi files from Sharpcap taken with my ZWO color camera. However suddenly Registax would not open the avi files any longer and I received a "range check error" message. At the same time, my computer would freeze causing me to press control-alt-delete to leave the program. I tried opening the avi's in VirtualDub but that program rejects my avi's also. I also uninstalled Registax and then installed it again. The same problem. The avi's will open in Autostakkert. Does anyone know of a fix for the Registax problem?

Thank you for your response and question. The AVIs I'm trying to open but failing to are between 3.39 and 6.13 GB. Unfortunately, I no longer have the AVIs that Registax 6 did open. But your question raises the possibility that the size of the present AVIs may be an issue. I will try to film some smaller files to see if Registax will open those. Thanks again.

Don't bother with Registax for stacking. In the majority of cases, AS!2 will be faster, much easier to use and generate better results 9especially if using a OSC camera).

Just stack in AS!2 and then drop the stacked, un-sharpened image into Regi6 for wavelet sharpening.

Thanks, Steve. I tried PIPP but still get an error message when attempting to open the AVI in Registax. But I'm going to investigate PIPP further since this is the first time I have heard of this program. So I guess I'll be using Autostakkert to stack and then Registax for its wavelets. Thanks for that suggestion, Zakalwe.

Your problem is almost certainly that Registax is only handling old format AVI files.  PIPP will generate these (Output Options Tab->AVI File Options->Generate Old Format AVI FIle) but they are limited to a maximum size of 4GB.  There are some ways to get around this in Registax, but I think using AS!2 for stacking and Registax for wavelets is the best solution.

Cheers,

Chris

PIPP Old Avi Format yields a "Range error" in Registax 6. But I found a go-around. The PIPP "old avi" format is accepted by VirtualDub. SO I edit the PIPP avi in VDub, removing images that are noisy, shaky, or too close to the edge,  and export in VirtualDub's "Old AVI format". Registax 6 has no problem with VirtualDub's "Old AVI" format, so it must be different from PIPP's. version.  Thanks Steve for the PIPP reference!
