Magallenic Clouds

Recommended Posts

Since I started taking pictures of the skies a few month ago I was waiting for the two Magallenic clouds to appear at a reasonable time (sort of). I actually thought they would be easier to catch but both clouds are fairly faint in pictures even though they are just visible with the naked eye. Anyway I used a Pentax K-30 with a 55-300mm DAL zoom lens. I took 20 images @ 10 sec and 10 images @ 20 sec (ISO6400) plus 5 dark frames each at 10 and 20 sec.

The small cloud has a very bright cluster (NGC104) in close proximity. And I like the large Magallenic cloud because of the features (wisps) around it. It is actually a lot bigger than I expected. Focal length for the large cloud was about 150mm and 200 mm for the small cloud.

The picture with both clouds is a 18mm wide angle shot.

Thanks for looking and clear skies to all!

Love seeing things that I will never see up here.

That actually goes both ways. Down here, I will never have a realistic shot at Andromeda. It does get over the horizon at some time in the year but not by much. And living in the hills... not a chance. The North American Nebula looks great - when you are on the other side of the world! But I'm not complaining, overall I think we are better off if I remember my early days in Germany correctly.

And thanks for your kind remarks to all! Clear skies.
