A home made GEM

Being at a loose end, I decided to have a go at building a GEM for someone to take up the gap between their Celestron 80mm refractor and their ETX tripod.

My aim was for very little cost and it is made from some off cuts of 43mm alloy tubing I built a dob with and some plywood which comes in 12" squares and is meant to be in the back of our cars for going under the car jacks when on sand.

It seems to have gone well, the bearings (if you can call them that!!) is cardboard wrapped around the tubing with sellotape on. It seems to work very smoothly and it only needs to rotate once a day.

It is driven by hand (at the moment) and set at 25 degrees for polar aligment (as that is the correct altitude here.

Alll the best.
