ISS imaging help

Hi, does anyone have any experience imaging the ISS afocally? I am having a hard time getting it perfect - I think it is a combination of the fact that my camera has no manual focus mode, and that I am having to manually track it with a Dobsonian. I think the main problem is the focus, so I was wondering - what is the best way to make sure the camera is focussed? I suppose I could look at a star before the station comes, and then press the autofocus button and make any adjustments to get the star sharp, and then hold the shutter button half way down until it arrives?
