Canon 450d: White balance settings

Recommended Posts

Quick query about white balance when imaging with a Canon 450d DSLR.

I've always had mine set at 'auto', but I notice that the colour balance on the images is a bit variable, with some images appearing pinkish and others appearing bluer. I just wonder if having it on auto colour balance results in the camera changing the balance with each image. Or does that make no difference with RAW images?

I'm thinking that I should have it at, say, 'daylight' to keep a consistent colour balance throughout the image run. Any advice on this?

The white balance is applied as a colour temperature setting in the raw file, but you can override it in processing of the raw, if done as a single image. You can have DSS construct a custom white balance for the images during the stacking process,

In stacking parms, Lights, at the bottom of the stacking mode box, set RGB channels background calibration, and in the RAW/Fits settings, make sure both the white balance boxes are unchecked. I use this technique and it deals with the pink colour cast from the SW LPR and the green from the CLS without any issues.
