Scope for a beginner

Hi SGL,

after a bit of research I am going to advise a friend to buy a Skywatcher Mercury 705, this scope is for her 9 year old son. I have noticed similair threads on this very subject over the past few weeks and it seems a pretty good choice. Is it worth her spending an extra £18.00 and buy the startravel 80 or is my choice adequate?

I think the choice of a refractor is the right one for a 9 year olds

first scope no need to mess about with collimating...But i think

id go for the startravel 80 I always remember sir patrick moore

advising that 3inch aperture good start for a refractor hope
