Nexstar hand control dim lcd

I recently brought a second hand Celestron C8-NGT that I am getting to grips with. Apart from a very stiff RA axis (which gets much much better when it's nicely warm in front of a cosy fire - I suspect the grease) it's a very nice clear 'scope.

But. . .

The hand controller lcd is a bit dim, especially the scrolling text which is virtually invisible until it stops!. I've cleaned and reinserted the ribbon cable on the circuit board but no change.

Is this a known feature?

I bought a Nexstar 80 refractor with no LCD output on the handset.

Hoping it would be the ribbon needing cleaning, I bought it.

Wasn't, LCD kaput. If its the standard 2 line 16 digit unit, you cant buy it as a spare I believe.

I've heard a reset sometimes works, but how you can do that I don't know. Firmware update sometimes works I've been told.

I tried the handset from another Nexstar unit but that wouldn't work.

Wish I could be more positive.
