Another useful article on guiding is found in the eqmod documentation about pulse guiding. There is a particularly helpful description and diagrams of the guiding graph, which shows you via the drawings what the varying spikes and drifts mean, and how you go about correcting them.

I believe the latest version of PHD has on the fly adjustments, knowing WHAT to adjust has always been a bit of an issue for me so the eqmod guide is printed and stays next to my obs PC. I also take a printed copy to star parties, where the out of obsy mount is more likely to wander a bit.
