Macavity
Never used a DOB, but I have used a "nudging", Alt-Azimuth, Giro-type mount. When you think about it (rarely a good idea. LOL) an object on the celestial equator moves a maximum 360 deg in 24h --> 1 deg every 4 minutes? For some reason, I rarely use "Herculean" magnifications in my MAKs - except for a spot of planetary observations. Therein, there is a lot of light available and (I suspect) seeing is the dominant limitation, rather than resolution (and light gathering)? As someone pointed out, mostly you're nudging quasi-horizontally? If you think hand-nudging is hard, think of my poor Ioptron mount... Nearer the celestial pole, it "thinks a bit"... nudges... "thinks a bit"... "sleeps" etc. etc. Quite disconcerting!
