John Couch Adams and France's Urbain Le Verrier, were jointly

credited with the discovery of Neptune, having both calculated it's position from pertubations in the orbit of Uranus.

Johann Gottfried Galle actually found it within two moon widths of where Leverrier predicted it would be, but the International Astronomy Union, awarded the discovery jointly to both Adams and LeVerrier

The planet of special interest this year, because on September 23 2010 it will be 164 years since Neptune’s discovery in 1846, just short of one “Neptune year.” This means that Neptune will be returning to the same spot in the sky where it was first discovered, having completed one full orbit around the Sun.
