Setting Circle Problem

After finally managing to get my setting circles on my dob base, I had a go tonight with limited success.

Waiting on a angle gauge I wanted to see if the azimuth measurements were accurate.

Pointing my scope at Capella, i took the Az reading from my ipod app, rotated my base to that Az and put the pointer over that degree. I then pointed my scope at Vega, read what the Az should be on my iPod app again, but it was about 4 degrees out.

I don't quite understand why, does the base have to sit perfectly level for the Az reading to be correct?
