M27 observation summary

Thank you to everyone who submitted an August observation report on M27.

Here are some conclusions I have made reading the reports. The best views reported were with a 10" reflector in dark sky Arizona. In this instance a UHC filter significantly enhanced the view allowing core detail and "billowy" nebulosity to be observed at x79.

The dumbell or applecore shape was observable in poorer conditions with smaller sopes. The nebulosity around the nebula is more of a challenge being most easily observed with higher aperture scopes. However in reasonable conditions with careful observation esp using averted vision the nebulosity at the sides can be discerned.

There is one comment of a blue grey colour but it is clear that none of the colour we are familiar with looking at M27 images is visible visually.

So there is something to see even with a small scope but aperture and and a UHC filter pay dividends
