Laptop USB Ports

In an attempt to up date my astro PC, I've got myself a second hand Laptop (with a broken screen, although that's another story) however I've got problems with the USB ports.

When I plug my Atik 16IC into a port it usually finds it however when using their software (Artemis Capture) I repeatedly keep getting an error message saying that there is an USB error and it won't display an image. Maxim can't find the CCD.

Is this a power supply problem? Tried going via a powered USB Hub and the CCD cannot be found.

There is nothing wrong with the camera or hub etc as it runs very stably with my old 800Hz Athlon Desktop.

Any suggestions?
