How close to the imaging object does the guide star have to be?

At the moment I center both scopes on a bright star and use whatever is in the FOV when imaging. I'm using a celestron 8se for imaging and a st80 for guiding so quite a difference in FOV.

What im doing at the moment works ok for me but is there any rule of thumb?

generally, if it works for you, then thats good enough.... only change from a system you know that works if you have issues.
