OK Olly - "you old fuddy duddy" :D you're right about the ease of use of a refractor v Newt, after all I do have both, although I have to disagree with dewing, the refractor dews up fairly readily the newt hasn't yet.

My reasoning was that you could get a larger aperture "faster" scope at a very reasonable price, especially the SW Newt. which would also be OK for visual work, don't get me wrong I love my 120ED but it costs more than 2x a Newt.

Collimation is a bind but with practice it is reasonably easy - use astrobabys' guide.

Like all things there a pros and cons for each design.

I jumped in at the deep end but didn't drown and I recommend Steves' book "making every photon count" great for the novice imager and could save you lots of dosh.
