For finding your way around the sky the Stellarium planetarium software is great, free download from Stellarium

Best to get the software as and when you need. If you have Windows Vista you have to be careful re compatibility

Stellarium is great as it lets you move time forward and plan out what you want to try to look at once the sky gets dark and the clouds clear. And when the clouds don't clear you can use it to 'see what you could av won!'

Google earth (in sky mode) is also good, though you can't 'see' everything it lists and is more for information than as a guide.
