How good are canons and the control software?

I have a Nikon D50 which is lovely but suffers from not being controllable properly from the PC.

This can´t get out of hand so I am only looking at a 300 or if I am feeling particularly brave a 350 (I don´t really have the money)

What are peoples experiences with the Canon and in particular how do you control it from the PC.

Has anyone used them with Maxim DL? I assume that with the DSLR plugin for maxim I will be able to configure the exposures I want in Maxim and therefore use ACP with it.

I am itching to cut down imaging times but am skint so I figure a 300 for 100 pounds would be a cheap option.

Maxin recognises and controls my 450D (and previously my 400D) through the USB data cable and a serial shutter cable. The facility to 'program' a run of images, including darks, flats and bias etc., is a great boon.
