Cleaning filters?

I was just wandering, what would be the best and safest way to clean finderprints off filters and eyepieces? I had my nephiew over yesterday and he rummeged thought all my astro kit found my filter and new eyepiece with fingerprints all over the glass!!

I have a glasses cloth.. would that work?

Dave, I use a rocket blower to clear any dust off, then Misc’ - Baader Optical Wonder Fluid. It works a treat. I use the same technique on my photographic gear.

Individual foil sealed "wet" optical tissues are also handy to keep with you...

I have a small hair line scratch on my LP filter.. (you have to put it up to the light to see it) will this have any effect on my images?

Greasy fingerprints will need quite some cleaning fluid to remove. Do it gently several times until it comes off. For the eyepiece don't use so much fluid at one point that it might seep inside the eyepiece. Be patient and don't rub.

The scratch shouldn't be too detrimental, but you may see a diffraction spike.
