The Warthog observing chair...

The Warthog

Recommended Posts

It came to my attention that some people think I am the kind of person who doesn't finish jobs. To dispel that base calumny, while waiting ever longer for the varnish on my tripod to build up to a deep sheen, I built an observing chair, from a plan in my mind, copying elements of other chairs I have seen.

To wit:

1. The basic parts cut out and leaning against my bicycle. The big piece is 1 3/8 x 5½ x 40", the smaller parts are 3/4 x 1 3/8 x 40", and the little bits on the rack are 1 3/8" square x 3/4", all pine.

2. I decided to glue the frame together before screwing it.

3. Once the glue had dried, I drilled each corner for a 5/16 x 3½ lag screw. I drilled the end of the extra narrow pieces and attached them at the top of the chair with washers to facilitate movement.

4. I countersunk the lag screw at the bottom to accomodate folding the chair.

5. Making the seat was a bit busy and I didn't take any pictures, but you can get the idea from the profile. It holds all 200 lb. of me without sliding down.

6. The chair high.

7. The chair low.

8. The chair folded flat. I am going to have to decide how to make this work with the seat on the chair. I've some Ideas.

Take that, all you doubters! :icon_salut:

I need to disassemble it for some sanding and varnishing. I think I am going to use old fashioned spar varnish on this, as the Varathane is making me crazy.

Yes, I'm going to use a length of light chain after I have done all the finishing jobs.

You have light chains in Canada? Cool - we mostly have switches, or string in the bathroom. We do get toilet chains here though... could be the same...

Great Result. Are you sure you built it only there is a dog in the image and I'm sure he has a drill in one of his paws (related to Grommit perhaps ?)

Cheers

She's a great dog. She's specially trained to pick up anything I drop and run into the back yard and bury it. :icon_salut:

  • 2 weeks later...

Here it is, finished and folded flat. I took a picture of it standing ready to sit on, but it didn't show up on the card. I rushed finishing it to take to Cherry Springs with me. I used Thompson's water seal, as I was afraid varnish would render it slippery, and I haven't put anything on the seat at present. There are still a couple of kinks to work out, but the seat folds flat against the frame, as you see.
