How dark is Hayle?

Off to Hayle in Cornwall for me hols in August (near St Ives).

I've already told SWMBO that the refractor is coming with us!

How dark are the skies in this area, does anyone know - I'm hoping pretty dark and certainly darker than London outskirts?!?

Hayle and St Ives are in the same area and it is quite built up. The darkest areas are the Lizard Peninsula and Lands Ends and Bodmin. The nearest dark skies to Hayle is probably up the coast past Godrevy on the cliffs. It may be best to head south of St Ives to Zennor so that there isnt any built up areas to your south.

Many years ago my sister lived in Newton Abbot in Devon and we were coming back late at night from Tintangel across Bodmin moor. it must have been about midnight and boy was it dark.

If I remenber correct we stopped the car to just stand and observe the sky unaided and could easily see Milky Way.
