argonaut
I was up late tonight to see if I could spot M57 with my GT100's. It was a little tricky from the back yard and it was quite low in the East, but managed it at 28x with the Skywatcher 19mm EF eyepieces from FLO.Thanks Steve they are very good in the 100's. A great pity they don't make something like a 9 or 10mm.With averted vision I could make out the ring itself. It was not just a fuzzy blob. By the time I moved onto Abireo to split (?) in my 10x50's the cloud had moved in. There will be other nights.Have a go with your 15x70's or 100mm binoculars and tell us if you can spot M57. It is worth the effort.Glen.
Talitha
Hi Glen, congrats on seeing a ring shape!Haven't tried with my 22x100s yet, but saw it last summer with the 11x70s after being asked if it was do-able. Turned out to be a very productive thread.
argonaut
Thanks for the link to last summers thread. It was a very good thread.WOW! 10x50's,that is going some. I must give it a try when Lyra is higher. It was interesting how the OIII filter coped with it. Something to look at in the future I think.I am wondering if you have spotted M97? It's another difficult one with bino's.Clear Skies.Glen.
Talitha
No, haven't tried M97 with the 11x70s but will as soon as the clouds go away and there's no moonwash. I'd also like to try the Eskimo Neb in GEM (ngc 2392) to see how it compares to M57.
acey
I haven't managed any of these smaller planetaries with binos. Seen the Helix Nebula though (15x70, dark site).Andrew
barkis
Binocular astronomy is very rewarding. Also threads like this one are an inspiration to beginners, in showing how effective they are on the night sky. Some good stuff in here. Ron.
