Avimo 7x42 bins

Picked up a pair of these recently and they’re rather nice  ex-British military 7x42 with fixed focus and unusually field collimateable via the hinges. 

Comparing them to some older 7x50 and 10x50 Porros I have, they hold their own in terms of brightness and sharpness- I think the massive bonded Porro prism must help there.

The 10x50 obviously gave darker background and better contrast but that’s a magnification thing i think. The fixed focus isn’t an issue for astro and it’s actually nice to be able to just pick them up and gaze without fiddling with focus/dioptres. They have loads of eye relief and big squishy eyecups so designed to be used with glasses if needed- very comfortable 👍

Not much weight saving over 7x50s (they’re 1.1kg) but they are bomb proof and waterproof which is good 👍 

One downside is they have a reticle in the RH eyepiece. I tried to remove it but it is well stuck in there- might have another go with better tools.

Overall though I like them very much

These look pretty cool! The huge prisms are great and the sturdy construction. I'm currently looking for something similar in 7x50.
